Noting the over 300,000 Harvard alumni and the record breaking 7,000 alumni
in attendance, Charles K. Brock, outgoing president of the Harvard Alumni
Association, opened the proceedings of its annual meeting. Following the
recognition of senior alumni, Brock introduced keynote speaker Ernesto
Zedillo, president of Mexico from 1994 to 2000. Zedillo is often credited
with leading Mexico toward greater democratization. Zedillo is now professor
of international economics and politics at Yale University and director
of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization.
Preceeding President Zedillo’s address, President
Lawrence H. Summers reported to the alumni, describing the goals and challenges
involved with comprehensively updating Harvard College’s core curriculum.
Recognizing alumni contributors, Harvard Corporation member emeritus Robert
Stone Jr. delivered a report on University resources.
