U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan
On June 10, 2004, Kofi Annan gave Harvard's
Commencement address at the Afternoon Exercises. In his address, Annan
praised the values of multinationalism, collective decision-making,
and the growing need for tolerance and compassion.
Stated Annan, both the U.N. and the global leadership role of the
United States are threatened by crises of collective security, global
solidarity, and cultural division. Now, more than ever, "the
UN offers the best hope of a stable world and a broadly equitable
world order, based on generally accepted rules." |

Report
to the Alumni: President Lawrence H. Summers

faced by economically disadvantaged families. In response, Summers announced several
new and innovative initiatives designed to "level the academic
playing field," including admissions outreach to disadvantaged
students; innovative new financial aid programs; and learning
