Substantial interest in Sardis arose during the eighteenth century, when Robert Wood and his party, including draftsman Giovanni Battista Borra, visited the site. Borra’s drawings and maps are a significant record of the remains of the ancient city. Although computer technologies allow architects great flexibility, the importance of these early works should not be underestimated. For example, Borra’s 1750 drawing of the Temple of Artemis shows six columns, while Charles Cockerell’s 1812 sketch shows three. Today only two are fully preserved. Thus these early images provide important clues as to when the columns were destroyed.
