By the early twentieth century drawings became more precise, focusing on accuracy rather than artistic interpretation. Both archaeological techniques and graphic recording became more systematic and objective. The goal was to communicate the complexity of the excavation and the architectural remains and to provide analytical information, such as accurate measurements. Despite this increased emphasis on precision, the artistry of the architect is evident. Drawings and photographs were employed together to provide a more complete picture.
