The Temple of Artemis, one of the major monuments of Sardis, is a fine example of Hellenistic Greek architecture and is the fourth largest Ionic temple in the world. Three excavations of the temple were undertaken before Howard Crosby Butler began his work in 1910, uncovering most of the building by 1914. Butler goals were different than those of the current excavation, and so his drawings are less detailed. The Butler expedition ended around the time of World War I; the current Harvard and Cornell expedition has continued to study this building, creating a plan ten times larger and far more detailed than Butler's. The current project also uses computer-aided techniques with the aim of recording the temple objectively and providing future scholars with the information to solve problems current archaeologists cannot.
