The drawings in the exhibition were made for a variety of purposes – to record the excavation, to explore possible reconstructions, and to illustrate publications. They were not created for public display. The time for organizing the exhibition was very short, with planning beginning in Sardis as a collaborative process during the summer field season of 2002. The exhibition, originally scheduled to take place in 2004, was moved to the summer of 2003 in order to coincide with the International Congress of Classical Archaeology held in Boston. The goal of the show was to illustrate how the attitudes of a particular time and the interests of the various draftsmen are reflected in their drawings. Aided by Sardis Office staff, the Art Museums’ photographers, registrars, conservators, and designers worked together to create an elegant and informative exhibit. Four authors and the Art Museums’ publications staff collaborated to produce a handsome catalogue as a permanent record of the exhibition.
