Crawford Greenewalt, Jr., is the Field Director of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, which he describes as a research project with the aim to explore and understand the ancient city of Sardis, the phases of its history, and in particular the Lydian era. The project is also educational, serving as a training ground for archaeologists, architects, and conservators. The current project began in 1958 under the leadership of George M.A. Hanfmann of Harvard and A. Henry Detweiler of Cornell. An earlier project under Howard Crosby Butler of Princeton University excavated at Sardis from 1910-1914.
