A variety of areas has been excavated at Sardis. Remains of Lydian houses of the sixth century B.C. were found beneath Roman houses and beneath the destruction of the Lydian fortification wall. This defensive wall was massive, measuring sixty-five feet thick and perhaps as much as one hundred feet high. Excavators were impressed both by the survival and the destruction of this impressive wall. The debris from the wall's destruction acted as a preservative blanket for the objects and structures beneath. In addition to houses, Roman remains include a bath-gymnasium complex, a synagogue, a row of shops, and an early Christian church.
