The tomb of King Alyattes reflects the monumentality that characterizes Lydian architecture. The tumulus is an enormous mound of earth, measuring more than one thousand feet in diameter. This burial mound is the largest of the almost five hundred tumuli in Lydia. The defensive city walls, sixty-five feet thick, are imposing in size and extent. The Lydian architecture that remains at Sardis gives a sense of the grandeur of the city at the time of Croesus.
