In 1753, in Poor Richard's Almanac, Franklin left detailed instructions on how to install lightning rods in ships and buildings. However, reluctance to use his lightning rod was strong, and it was to be many years until its use was commonplace. As Professor Herschbach explains, the effects of this hesitancy were disastrous.
