In the eighteenth century a spectacular performance was arranged for Louis XV. Several hundred monks were joined in a semicircle, each attached to his neighbor by an iron wire. The circuit was completed when attached to the power source. Much to the amusement of the king, at the moment of electrical discharge, the monks all jumped in unison from the shock.
