John P. Reardon, executive director of the Harvard Alumni Association, introduces Harvard in the Olympics, an educational forum on the experiences of Harvard alumni as coaches, athletes, and administrators at the Olympic games. Since 1896, over 130 Harvard alumni and athletes have competed at the Olympics, yet this forum is the first time they have gotten together to discuss their experiences.
He continues by introducing two of the participants in the forum. The first, the moderator John Powers, is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and has worked for the Boston Globe since 1973. After graduating cum laude in the Harvard class of 1970, he covered the Olympics as well as other major international sporting events such as the World Cup. The second, the keynote speaker Professor Gregory Nagy, is the director of the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies and served as chair of the Harvard University Classics Department and President of the American Philological Association.
