Growing up in the Boston area, CJ Young found himself surrounded by hockey idols and as a young kid "the seed had [already] been set for him ". As part of his training in the run-up to the '92 Olympics, where he played on the US Men's team, he was expected to constantly improve his conditioning. As the team was being selected, in part from a national sports festival he played at, he pushed himself to stay committed and focused in his competition for one of the twenty spots on the team. In the off season, where the training is up to the individual, he found it most rewarding to practice with other players on his team, many of whom happened to live in the Boston area. Together, they focused on drills they might not have otherwise done alone, an experience that ended up helping him significantly while in training during the regular season.
