National Portrait Gallery No. 3065
  • In 1628, Cromwell was selected as a member of Parliament for Huntington borough and in 1640, was selected as a member of both the Short and Long Parliaments of Cambridge borough.
  • Cromwell first intervened in political affairs when he called for the release from prison of pamphleteer John Lilburne.
  • An active officer even before the war was declared, Cromwell began his military career by raising troops and preparing cavalry.
  • Although Cromwell had never been a militia commander prior to 1640, Cromwell possessed a natural military genius.
