Jane Menken is professor of sociology and director of the Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. As chair of the National Academy of Sciences's Committee on Population, Menken examined how the world will
deal with the increasing longevity and aging of the global population. She has also conducted two decades of groundbreaking work on
women and fertility in Bangladesh.
Menken presents her study of a rural population in Bangladesh. She considers reproduction and women's survival, as
well as the connection between a woman's health and her subsequent fertility. She looks at the effects of a woman's health, age, weight,
and education on fertility. Menken offers her conclusions about gender bias, resources and competition, and maternal
empowerment and care.
