The Science Center Research Lecture Series began in 1973, and is an opportunity for faculty members at Harvard to
present their scientific research in terms accessible to a non-professional audience. Over 150 faculty have shared their research
findings, opening a window on science to students, faculty, staff, and members of the community.
Dr. Eric Mazur holds a triple appointment as Harvard College Professor, Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics, and
Professor of Physics at Harvard University.
In his introduction to Professor Murray's presentation, Mazur describes the remarkable progress of current scientific discovery,
stating that "nowhere is this progress more rapid than in the area of genomics." Says Mazur, Murray's work raises profound questions
that deal with genomics, such as "How did life evolve?" and "How do cells and organisms work?" Murray's research, says Mazur, explores
principles that underlie the function and evolution of cells, such as how genetic information is transferred during cell division and
how cells evolve under different conditions.
