The most striking fact about Down Syndrome is that about 2/3 of the time, it occurs due to mistakes in the production of
the egg. In these cases, "the incidence at which this happens goes up incredibly steeply with age." Why is this true? Professor Murray
speculates that the increase in cases of Down Syndrome is not due to incorrect alignment of the chromosome as the woman ages, but
rather to the efficacy of the checkpoint and the ability of the checkpoint to successfully detect chromosomal defects.
