Audience Question and Answer
Professor Lawrence Buell

Question 1: I'm a member of a coalition in North Adams, Massachusetts. Other members of the coalition talk to me as if “nature” meant untouched by human hands…While they are “purists” in that sense, they want to save the wetlands in the area.… [However], in saving the wetlands, they want a nice, new one, all of which require a dam. They want to restore it to its natural condition. They never quite decide whether they want their environmental concern to benefit human beings or other species…. These things are not necessarily contradictory, but it seems to me that this issue requires a little more clarity….

Question 2: Can you give us your opinion or comparative view of receptivity or sensitivity to sustainable development policies in other parts of the world, in comparison to those of us in the United States? It’s a touchy issue, but I think we sometimes have to step up to the plate to accept a whole measure of responsibility for the world’s sustainable resources.
