Gary King (David Florence Professor of Government) offers a wide range of researchers, policymakers, pollsters, and others help in addressing two critical problems in conducting survey research: how to measure complicated concepts and how to ensure that respondents understand the intent and meaning of the survey questions. Professor King introduces the method of anchoring vignettes -- descriptions of hypothetical people or situations that survey researchers can use to correct survey responses that people of different cultures, races, sexes, or countries may interpret in incomparable ways. We hope this talk changes the way you view poll results reported in the media and gives you a feel for a new scientific development designed to improve survey research.
