Madam C. J. Walker: African-American Hair Care
Madam C. J. Walker, part of the first generation of African Americans born into freedom after the Civil War, is one of several beauty pioneers featured in the exhibition who went from rags to riches through successful marketing of her products. Mayo chronicles Walker’s marketing techniques, successful among African-American women at a time when society was segregated. Mayo reveals that Walker marketed her products nationally and internationally to the “darker races” and, as a result, created a nationwide network of female entrepreneurs who owned their own businesses selling Madam C. J. Walker products.
