The Genteel Marriage Market
|
 |
| |
Mary Gordon, novelist and professor of
English at Barnard College, investigates the genteel marriage in a
talk titled "Suitability and Presentability: A Discussion of
Female Capital in Pride and Prejudice and The House of Mirth."
Professor Gordon says that a fiction writer must always battle with
the anxiety that her work is literally child's play, yet she surmises
that what Jane Austen and Edith Wharton wrote about in the nineteenth
century is an issue as relevant today as it was back in Austen's day. |
